Viz held a press only event at New York Comic-Con this weekend about the new Shonen Jump manga Ultimo, a collaboration between Marvel's Stan Lee & Shaman King's Hiroyuki Takei. Both artists were at the panel to talk about their new work. There was a lot of Q&A about the manga & Stan Lee's decision to get involved in it.
Perhaps the most important part of the panel was that they announced that Ultimo would be running in the English version of Shonen Jump magazine! While there will be some waiting time between each chapter's monthly Japanese release & the American translated release, Viz promises it will be the shortest turn-around time for any manga in the history of the magazine. It'll be an even shorter wait then the Yu-Gi-Oh GX manga, which has it's Japanese & English chapters published less than a year apart. No word on which currently running manga, if any, Ultimo will replace in the American magazine.
As for some of the questions they got asked, Lee said he'd be happy to work on an anime adaptation of the story if it ever gets to that point. The English version of the manga will contain Lee's own words as the dialogue, as opposed to the Japanese version which is only based on his script & adapted to sound appropriate to a Japanese audience. There was also the question of how long the manga would run for- whether it has a set length of only a few volumes or if it'll go on seemingly forever like many Shonen Jump stories. Lee replied that plans are for the story to go on for a very long time & he currently has ending in sight. With the first chapter of Ultimo beginning last week in Japan, it should be only a matter of time before we see it here in the US.
