Japan isn't the only country that can make live-action movies based on Death Note. Vertigo Entertainment has announced that they'll be making a live-action adaptation of the Japanese manga & anime for American viewers. This isn't uncharted territory for Vertigo either, as they've done this kind of thing before. They're well known for taking Asian movies & remaking them into English movies. Some of their work includes the Grudge, the Departed, & Shutter. Vlas & Charles Parlapanides (currently working on TV series "Undercover") were hired to write the screenplay.
I know a lot of people are thinking that a US version of Death Note isn't really necessary now that Viz is bringing over the live-action movies from Japan. But since Vertigo seems to be kind of the expert studio of taking Japanese movies & Americanizing them, this just might work after all. Just as long as they cast Zac Efron as Kira.
